Department of Surgery
Division of General Surgery
The Division of General Surgery has expertise and high-volume clinical practices in trauma and surgical critical care, and the treatment of conditions of the thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, adrenal glands, spleen, esophagus, pancreas, colon and stomach. Our surgical faculty have expertise in the latest minimally invasive techniques in operations of the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, colon and esophagus.
Current programs
Evaluation and treatment of constipation, incontinence, rectal cancer, complex abscesses and fistulas, and rectal pain.

The Endocrine Surgery Program is highly specialized. Patients with problems involving the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and other endocrine surgery problems are evaluated prospectively by a group of multidisciplinary physicians: surgeons, endocrinologists and radiologists. The most appropriate surgery is performed, and the patient is followed for a successful completion of the episode or problem. Referring physicians are kept informed at each point of the process. Minimally invasive approaches for the surgical treatment of parathyroid, thyroid, and adrenal diseases are frequently employed.

The division of general surgery supervises the Esophageal Function Laboratory for Robert Wood Johnson Medical Group. The latest esophageal pH and mobility study equipment (Synectics System) for esophageal manometry and 24-hour pH monitoring is available, along with skilled technical support. Our surgeons perform these studies or arrange for competent gastroenterologists to have access to the equipment and technical help when this arrangement is desired.
The General Surgery Program offers a full array of general surgical procedures, especially abdominal and gastrointestinal surgery, hernia surgery and breast procedures.
Minimally invasive (laparoscopic and robotic) colorectal surgery allows the surgeon to operate on the colon through several small "ports" and a camera (similar to gall bladder surgery). The benefits include faster recovery, reduced pain, and quicker return to activities of daily living. The risks are the same as open surgery. Procedures that are appropriate for minimally invasive colorectal surgery include, but are not limited to the following:
- Cancer of the colon and rectum
- Diverticulitis
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Rectal prolapse
- Colostomy
- Colonic inertia
We offer several tests used to assess esophageal function and to investigate acid reflux (i.e., esophageal manometry and esophageal PH testing), as well as operative treatment using laparoscopic and other minimally invasive techniques to help minimize discomfort.
Special Treatments or Services
- Laparoscopic repair of hiatal hernia and paraesophageal hernia
- Laparoscopic treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease
- Laparoscopic treatment of achalasia
- pH probe testing
- Esophageal manometry
We offer a full range of laparoscopic abdominal surgical procedures, including (but not limited to) splenectomy, adrenalectomy, nephrectomy, colorectal surgeries, operations for GERD and incisional hernia repair.
Full service provided for laparoscopic procedures on the spleen, adrenal gland, pancreas and donor renal transplant.
We offer operations for benign and malignant conditions of the thyroid that can be done as an outpatient. We use small incisions, local anesthesia and sedation, when appropriate. Approximately one-half of thyroid patients and 80 percent of parathyroid patients are cared for as outpatients.
Special Treatments or Services
- Small incisions
- Operations done with local anesthesia and conscious sedation
- Outpatient surgery
- Intra-operative hormone monitoring

The division's Pelvic Floor and Incontinence Program provides a multidisciplinary approach to restoring function in both men and women.
A Team Approach
Often, conditions associated with the pelvic floor require patients to seek treatment from several doctors across multiple medical specialties. The Pelvic Floor and Incontinence Program is unique because it combines the expertise and medical services of: More Info
